This spinoff of the popular reality TV game show sees ten teen clothing designers seek to be crowned the champion of Project Runway Junior each season. Unlike the adult version of the show an age limit has been placed on the designers entering the show of between the ages of 13 and 17, which places them in the generation growing up watching the original season.

Co-host Tim Gunn returns from the adult version of the series and is also used as the mentor for the designers, which also allows him to have a single save to be used in the series that allows him to bring back a single competitor who has been eliminated. Although the show has been designed to include and appeal to kids the difficulty of the tasks competitors undertake are no easier than those in the full version of the show. Competitors have the chance to win a scholarship to a fashion school and a cash prize.
