In the third episode of season 16 of Project Runway, the designers are challenged to create stunning runway looks from recycled materials. This unconventional challenge leaves the designers in a frenzy as they scavenge for materials within their designated locale- an attic. The designers have to think outside the box to create unique silhouettes from old dresses, sheets and even lampshades. They also have to be mindful of sustainability and ethical fashion as they redefine what it means to be a “green” designer.

As soon as the designers get into their materials room, tensions start building up as they struggle to identify useful materials from old furniture, clothing and miscellaneous household items. Many of them are apprehensive about the challenge and are unsure of how they can turn the mass of mismatched materials into cohesive garments that meet the judges' expectations.

Tim Gunn of course makes his rounds, offering individual advice and encouragement to the designers. He reminds them to be mindful of silhouettes and to have fun with the challenge. Guest judge Braeden Sunshine’s tips on incorporating color into eco-friendly clothing are also helpful for the designers. They spend an intense hour sketching and developing their ideas before getting a chance to head back to the workroom.

In the workroom, the designers scramble to transform their pile of unconventional materials into fabulous fashion pieces. Some embrace the wacky material choices, while some struggle to make sense of their materials in the context of a runway garment. There are some standouts, like Kenya, who quickly sketches up her plan and goes with a cape and pants combo that is made from a futon cover and old blankets. Meanwhile, Ayana goes with a yellow and green skirt and top duo made from plastic bags that somehow look chic and effortless. On the other hand, Michael and Shawn duo have a clash in opinions as they struggle to reinterpret a lampshade into a wearable piece.

One thing the audience notices is the diversity of the designers and the unique stories that come with them. Batani, for instance, shares her story of how she came from West Africa and grew up in a family of creative women. Her design is inspired by the traditional fabrics from her home country and she hopes to do them justice with her entry. Similarly, Margarita's design closely intertwines with her grandmother's memory and her Puerto Rican heritage.

As the day closes and time grows tight, the designers work overtime to finish their creations. Tim Gunn makes his rounds, checking up on everyone, but there isn't much he can do to diffuse the chaos as the dress forms are adorned with now unrecognizable materials. The hair and makeup crew try to make the best of odd hairnets, hats, and shoe covers as they work on enhancing each look on the models. Finally, the runway show begins and designers' fate at the hands of the judges- along with the three looks from fellow designers- get to be seen by a thrilled audience waiting in anticipation.

Overall, the episode stands true to the Project Runway legacy of unconventional challenges that challenge the designers' creativity and test their problem-solving skills. The diverse backgrounds of the contestants breathe new life into the competition, and the recycled materials idea resonates with the times and the changing perception of fashion. The runway show is filled with both gasps and groans as the judges’ critiques are revealed- with some designers soaring in new heights, while others faltering. The third episode of season 16- An Unconventional Recycling- is surely entertaining and filled with surprises.
