In Rake (AU) season 2 episode 3, titled "R vs Wooldridge & Anor," we see the ever-charismatic criminal barrister Cleaver Greene (played by Richard Roxburgh) take on a case that appears hopeless from the get-go.

Wooldridge, a sheep farmer, has been charged with murder after he shoots two teenagers who had broken into his home. While it may seem like he was simply defending himself and his property, things take a turn when it's revealed that one of the teenagers was actually his son's friend. This revelation makes it difficult for Cleaver to argue self-defense, and he must come up with an alternative defense strategy that will win over the jury.

To add to his already complicated case, Cleaver's personal life is in shambles. His wife is divorcing him and taking everything he owns, including his beloved Porsche. His personal problems seep into his professional life, making it difficult for him to focus on the case.

As the trial presses on, Cleaver must use all of his cunning wit and charm to sway the jury and avoid a conviction for Wooldridge. He calls upon his friend and expert witness, Dr. Wendy, to testify on behalf of Wooldridge's mental state during the incident. However, the opposing counsel, Joe Sandilands, is just as cunning and uses every opportunity to sway the jury against Wooldridge.

Through it all, Cleaver faces the harsh reality that sometimes, not every case can be won. He must come to terms with the possibility that Wooldridge may be found guilty, despite his best efforts.

Overall, "R vs Wooldridge & Anor" is a tense and emotional episode that showcases the highs and lows of criminal defense work. Roxburgh's performance as Cleaver is top-notch, and viewers are sure to be on the edge of their seats as they watch the trial unfold.
