In Record of Grancrest War season 1 episode 3, titled "Battle Flag", chaos ensues as a battle erupts between the Orleans Knights and the Union of Cremona. The episode picks up where the previous one left off with the introduction of two new characters: Alexis Doucet, the leader of the Orleans Knights, and Marrine Kreische, the leader of the Union of Cremona. Both of them are powerful mages and possess Crests, which are symbols that represent their magical abilities.
As the episode begins, the two armies are seen gathering on opposite sides of a valley. Several skirmishes break out, with soldiers from both sides engaging in combat. Lord David Lassic, who's leading the Union of Cremona's forces, comes up with a plan to divert the attention of the Orleans Knights. He sends a small unit to attack a nearby village, hoping that the Orleans Knights would send troops to defend it, thereby weakening their main force.
But Alexis is a wise commander and he sees right through Lassic's plan. He sends a small detachment to deal with the attackers while he leads the main force towards the Union of Cremona's camp. In this scene, we see just how powerful Alexis is as a mage. He is able to cast powerful spells that create giant barriers and summon magical creatures to aid his troops. His Crest appears to be that of a griffin, which could explain his affinity to summoning powerful mythical creatures.
Meanwhile, Theo is still struggling to control his Crest. When he attempts to use it, he is consumed by its power and loses control. He is unable to distinguish friend from foe, and he even injures some of his own men. Siluca intervenes and manages to calm him down, advising him not to use his Crest unless it's absolutely necessary.
As the battle rages on, we see a few key events unfold. Lord Lassic attempts to assassinate Marrine Kreische, but he is thwarted by one of her loyal followers. This event reveals just how fragile the Alliance between the Union of Cremona and the Fantasia Union really is. Both leaders acknowledge that they are only working together out of necessity, and their ultimate goal is to conquer the continent for themselves.
Another important scene involves Priscilla and her magical sword, which seems to possess a will of its own. Priscilla is able to use the sword to cut through magical barriers, and she even manages to wound Alexis. This scene sets up the importance of magical relics and artifacts in this world and hints at the real power of these objects.
The episode concludes with a decisive victory for the Orleans Knights. They manage to capture Lord Lassic, and Theo is able to use his newfound leadership skills to persuade the captured soldiers to switch sides. This victory is short-lived, however, as Alexis reveals that Lord Lassic was a decoy, and the real battle is about to begin.
Overall, "Battle Flag" is an action-packed episode that sets up a lot of the key themes and conflicts that will likely play out over the course of the season. The characters are well-developed, and it's clear that there are no true heroes or villains in this world - everyone is out for themselves. The use of Crests and magical artifacts adds a level of complexity to the battles, and I'm excited to see how they're used in future episodes. If you're a fan of action-packed anime with well-developed characters and intricate plots, then Record of Grancrest War is definitely worth checking out.
