Lou Mazzuchelli is a high-school English teacher, passionate about his job but feeling unfulfilled. One day, he learns that the school's theater director, Tracy, is stepping down from her position, and he takes the opportunity to pitch himself as her replacement. The school's principal, Mr. Ward, is initially skeptical, but he agrees to give Lou a shot.

Lou's first order of business is to choose a play for the school's upcoming production. He decides on "Spring Awakening," a controversial musical that deals with mature themes such as sex, suicide, and abortion. The students are excited about the selection, but some parents and community members are concerned about the play's content.

Meanwhile, Lou is also dealing with personal issues at home. His wife, Gail, is supportive of his new role but worried about the strain it will put on their relationship. Their son, Gordy, is struggling socially and academically, and Lou is unsure how to help him.

As rehearsals for "Spring Awakening" begin, tensions mount between Lou and some of the students. Michael, a talented but troubled student, is resistant to Lou's direction, and Simon, an openly gay student, starts to feel ostracized by some of his peers. Lou must navigate these challenges while also trying to convince the school board and community that "Spring Awakening" is a worthwhile and artistically valid choice for the school's production.

The episode ends with the cast and crew of "Spring Awakening" performing a powerful rendition of the musical's opening number, "Mama Who Bore Me." Lou and the students are united in their passion for the show and their belief in its ability to challenge and inspire its audience. But the controversy surrounding the production is far from over, and Lou must continue to fight for his vision while also balancing his personal and professional responsibilities.
