In Salvage Dawgs season 1 episode 10, the team sets their sights on a historic Foursquare church located in Roanoke, Virginia. Made of brick and built in the early 1900s, the church features towering columns and stunning stained glass windows.
As the Salvage Dawgs team approaches the church, they can see that it's in serious disrepair. The roof is leaking, the floorboards are rotting, and the plaster walls are crumbling. Despite the daunting task ahead of them, Mike and the crew are determined to salvage as much as possible from the church before it's demolished.
Inside the church, the team splits up to tackle different projects. Grayson and Tay begin removing the massive wooden pews from the sanctuary. The pews are incredibly heavy, and it takes all of their strength to carry them out of the church and load them onto the truck. Meanwhile, Mike and Robert work on removing the stained glass windows. The windows are delicate and fragile, and the team takes great care to remove them without damaging the intricate designs.
Next, Mike and Robert turn their attention to the pipe organ located at the front of the sanctuary. The organ has fallen into disrepair, and it's clear that it hasn't been played in years. Despite its condition, Mike and Robert are thrilled to salvage the organ and give it new life.
The team also salvages several ornate light fixtures from the church, including a striking chandelier that was located in the baptistry. The chandelier is made of wrought iron and features intricate scrollwork and crystal accents.
Outside the church, the Salvage Dawgs crew tackles the porch and stoop. The porch is in terrible condition, and it's clear that it hasn't been maintained in years. Mike and Tay work on removing the worn wooden floorboards and replacing them with salvaged wood from other projects. Meanwhile, Grayson and Robert work on salvaging the massive columns that support the porch roof. The columns are made of solid stone and weigh several hundred pounds each. It takes all four members of the crew to lift them onto the truck.
As they work on salvaging the church, the Salvage Dawgs team learns about the history of the building. The Foursquare church was built in the early 1900s and served as a spiritual home for the local community for decades. Over the years, the congregation dwindled, and the church fell into disrepair. Despite efforts to save the building, it was ultimately deemed structurally unsound and slated for demolition.
The Salvage Dawgs team feels a sense of responsibility to preserve the history of the Foursquare church and honor the memories of those who worshiped there. By salvaging as much as possible from the building, they are able to give new life to architectural elements that might otherwise be lost forever.
In the end, the Salvage Dawgs team salvages a remarkable amount of material from the Foursquare church. From the stunning stained glass windows to the massive stone columns, the salvaged items will find new homes and new uses in projects around the country. Most importantly, the team is able to preserve a piece of history and honor the legacy of the Foursquare church.
