Ep 5. Out of Sight

Dr. Charlie Harris, a head surgeon at Hope Zion Hospital, lies in a coma after a car accident. His fiancée, Dr. Alex Reid, struggles to keep herself together while also maintaining her duties as Chief Surgical Resident at the hospital. In episode 5 of season 1, "Out of Sight," Alex faces a new challenge as her patient, an Olympic boxer named Devon, begins to lose her vision.

Devon is in the hospital after sustaining a head injury during a boxing match. As Alex examines her, she notes that Devon's pupils have not returned to their normal size, indicating a potential issue with her vision. Devon insists that she can see just fine, but Alex orders additional tests to ensure that her eyesight is not at risk.

Meanwhile, Dr. Joel Goran, a hotshot surgeon who is often at odds with Alex, is dealing with his own difficulties in the wake of a patient's death. He refuses to admit any fault on his part and lashes out at everyone around him. Alex tries to talk to him about the situation, but Joel remains closed off and defensive.

As Devon's vision worsens, Alex becomes more concerned about the potential long-term effects of her injury. She consults with Dr. Shahir Hamza, a brilliant neurosurgeon, to determine the cause of the problem. Together, they formulate a plan to perform a delicate surgery that may save Devon's vision.

However, as they prepare for the surgery, a new obstacle arises: Devon's coach wants her to leave the hospital in order to attend a press conference for her upcoming fight. Alex and Shahir insist that Devon cannot leave the hospital, but the coach becomes increasingly insistent. Alex realizes that the coach is worried about losing money if Devon withdraws from the fight, and that he doesn't truly care about her well-being.

Meanwhile, Charlie's spirit is still in the hospital, able to see and hear everything that's going on around him while he remains trapped in his coma. He observes Devon's situation and becomes fixated on her drive and determination. As Alex and Shahir perform the surgery, Charlie guides them through the process, offering suggestions and advice that ultimately lead to a successful outcome.

In the end, Devon's vision returns to normal, and she is able to compete in her fight with renewed vigor. Alex and Joel eventually come to a mutual understanding, with Joel acknowledging his role in the patient's death and apologizing for his behavior. And Charlie continues to watch over everyone at the hospital, still hoping for a chance to wake up and return to the life he once knew.
