We Do Not Touch the First Ladies is the twelfth episode of Scandal's third season. The episode starts with the White House mourning as news breaks of Daniel Douglas's death, the Vice President, and Cyrus realizing that James's undercover article on Daniel is almost ready to print. In the meantime, James and David wake up Olivia Pope to deal with their situation.
Fitz is having a hard time trying to process the news of Daniel Douglas's death. The President asks Mellie for advice, and she suggests that he should take some time away from the office. Fitz decides to ignore Mellie's advice and goes ahead with his daily schedule while everyone looks bewildered. Fitz eventually becomes erratic and crushes a gold teapot, which makes him realize that something is wrong. Fitz confides in Olivia and tells her that he misses his dad and he doesn't know how to deal with the fact that he is dead.
Mellie meets with Olivia to talk about her plan to deal with her husband's erratic behavior. She suggests that they make an appearance on a talk show to showcase the First Lady’s personal side and in the process, try to reign in her husband's outbursts. Olivia sees this as a fantastic idea and sets about making arrangements for the talk show. At the same time, Elizabeth North, who is a new character in this season, discovers that Mellie's book is going to reveal some shocking details about their private life.
Cyrus is the only person who knows that the Vice President was murdered and that they need to make sure that the press doesn't find out. He desperately tries to keep the murder under wraps while also trying to deal with the situation of James's article on Daniel being almost ready for publication. During a dinner with Olivia, James, and David, Cyrus asks James not to reveal the details of the murder of the Vice President, but James tells him that he has to make a choice between keeping his job and telling the truth.
The talk show featuring Mellie is a success as she manages to showcase her personal side, and Fitz's outbursts are overshadowed by her charming persona. However, things take an unexpected turn when the host of the talk show decides to ask Mellie an uncomfortable question. The question is about Mellie's possible affair with Andrew, Fitz's friend who was in charge of his presidential campaign, who has now become a character in season 3.
