After the shocking events of the previous season finale, Scandal's fifth season opens with a dramatic episode titled "Heavy is the Head". President Fitzgerald Grant is now running for re-election but his campaign has hit a snag due to some troubling news that has come to light. Meanwhile, Olivia Pope has left Washington D.C. and is living a very different life now.
The episode opens with Olivia Pope on a beach in Zanzibar, Tanzania, where she is relaxing and enjoying the sun. However, she can't escape the drama that she left behind in Washington as she keeps getting frantic phone calls from her team. Olivia eventually returns to D.C. where she finds that things have not improved in her absence.
President Grant's staff are scrambling to address the bad news that has emerged about him. It seems that the President's girlfriend, now ex-girlfriend, has filmed a tell-all interview where she has revealed details about their relationship. The interview is set to air on national television and the President's team is frantically trying to come up with a way to mitigate the damage the interview may cause to his re-election campaign.
Olivia figures out a way to handle the situation and is dispatched by the President to handle it in a way that won't damage his campaign. Initially, she seems to be succeeding but trouble brews as she begins to experience some pushback from those involved in the coverup. The tension is electric and makes for some edge-of-your-seat viewing.
On the other hand, Olivia's former co-workers at Pope & Associates are struggling in her absence with one seasoned employee, Abby Whelan, attempting to keep everything together. Abby is now the White House Press Secretary and because of this, she has little choice but to do everything in her power to defend the President and his campaign. This puts a strain on her relationships with her former colleagues.
Meanwhile, Olivia's father, Eli Pope, also known as Rowan, has resurfaced and is causing trouble. He is determined to do whatever it takes to prevent his daughter from being with Fitz. His arrival throws a wrench into Olivia's plans and leaves everyone scrambling to figure out what he's up to and what he wants.
As the episode progresses, a new character is introduced, a high-powered political consultant named Lillian Forrester. She is brought in to help the President with his campaign and to manage the fallout from the interview that's about to air. Her methods are unconventional and ruthless, and she is not afraid to get her hands dirty.
As expected from Scandal, this episode is full of twists and turns and ends on a cliffhanger that leaves viewers anxious for the next episode. From the explosive opening to the shocking final scene, every moment of "Heavy is the Head" is filled with tension and drama.
Overall, "Heavy is the Head" is a great start to Scandal's fifth season. It's intense, fast-paced, and features some of the best performances from the show's talented cast. The addition of Lillian Forrester also brings a new level of intrigue to the show. Viewers who enjoyed the previous seasons of Scandal will definitely enjoy this episode and the new direction the show is taking.
