Ep 1. My American Girl

In the season 3 premiere of Scrubs, entitled "My American Girl," we find our protagonist Dr. John "J.D." Dorian struggling to come to terms with his feelings for his ex-girlfriend Elliot Reid, who has just returned from her fellowship in another city. Meanwhile, his best friend and fellow resident Dr. Christopher Turk is dealing with his jealousy over his girlfriend Carla's newfound success at her job.

The episode kicks off with a fantasy sequence in which J.D. imagines Elliot returning to Sacred Heart Hospital in slow motion, set to "American Girl" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. J.D. spends the rest of the episode trying to figure out his true feelings for Elliot, whom he dated briefly in the past but found too neurotic and high maintenance to commit to.

Meanwhile, Turk struggles with his own insecurities as Carla starts taking on more responsibilities at the hospital. He worries that she'll become too busy for him and that he won't be able to keep up. This storyline culminates in a touching scene where Carla reassures Turk that she loves him for who he is, flaws and all.

As always, the episode features plenty of zany antics from the show's supporting cast, including J.D.'s mentor Dr. Perry Cox and the hospital's janitor, who continues to torment J.D. with his various schemes and pranks. There are also several patient storylines woven throughout the episode, including a young girl with a rare heart condition and a man who refuses surgery despite suffering from a potentially fatal illness.

Overall, "My American Girl" is a strong start to Scrubs' third season, balancing the show's trademark humor with deeper exploration of the characters' emotions and relationships. Fans of the show will be delighted to see J.D. and Elliot's romance take center stage once more, and to witness Turk and Carla's relationship continue to grow and evolve.
