When we return to Sacred Heart Hospital, the first episode of Season 7 of Scrubs finds the residents descending upon their new class. Every year JD and Turk teach the new interns a lesson, and this year is no different. They convince the newbies that they must have a medical dictionary in order to participate. Meanwhile, Dr. Cox finds an unlikely alter-ego in Dr. Kelso, which shakes his confidence at work.
JD is dreaming of being a superhero, leading to a musical dream sequence. In real life, he's eager to befriend the new medical residents, but when Turk disagrees with the philosophy of one new female resident, JD must choose between his friendship and his principles. Elsewhere, Dr. Kelso instigates a turf war between anesthesiologists and surgeons to secure the best lunch spot in the hospital cafeteria.
Dr. Cox is upset that his son Jack is growing up too fast, causing him to reflect on his own life, and he confides in Elliot about how he's feeling. Cox also draws encouragement from an unlikely source whose wise advice reminds him of the true purpose of his job.
Overall, this episode of Scrubs is a lot like the ones that preceded it. JD is still trying to find his place in the world, and he's still learning that sometimes being a good doctor means making hard decisions that won't win you any popularity contests. Meanwhile, Dr. Cox is grappling with his own insecurities, trying to come to terms with the fact that he's not as young (or invincible) as he used to be.
What makes My Own Worst Enemy stand out, though, is its focus on mentorship. Previously, JD and Turk have always been the ones learning from their superiors. But in this episode, they're the ones in charge, tasked with turning the interns into real doctors. At the same time, Dr. Cox is reminded of the importance of his job, and how helping others is the ultimate goal of medicine.
Scrubs has always been known for its quirky humor, and this episode is no different. From the musical dream sequence to the battle between the anesthesiologists and surgeons, there's plenty of laughs to be had here. But underneath the jokes, there's a real sense of heart and purpose to the show. These doctors may be flawed, but they're also doing their best to make a difference in the world.
In short, My Own Worst Enemy is another strong episode of Scrubs, one that sets the stage for a new year at Sacred Heart Hospital. Fans of the show will find plenty to enjoy here, from the familiar humor to the poignant moments of mentorship and reflection. And for those who are new to Scrubs, this episode is a great introduction to the quirky, heartwarming world of this beloved medical comedy.
