Ep 9. The Mother

The Secret and Lies season 1 episode 9 titled "The Mother" continues the intense drama that the show is known for. After discovering that his wife Christy is pregnant with their third child, Ben Crawford is beside himself. His troubles are far from over though as the evidence pointing towards him as the killer of his son Tom refuses to go away.

The episode begins with Ben at his office where he receives a visit from Abby, Tom's best friend from school. She tells Ben that she knows he didn't kill Tom and that she saw him and his dog at the park the night of Tom's death. Ben is relieved to hear this and Abby promises to help him in any way that she can.

Meanwhile, Detective Cornell is putting pressure on Jess, Ben's neighbor and former mistress, to come clean about her relationship with Ben. Jess is evasive and refuses to answer any questions that might incriminate her. Cornell is convinced that Jess knows more than she is letting on and refuses to let her go.

Christy is having a difficult time dealing with the fact that she is pregnant and the possibility that Ben might be Tom's killer. She seeks comfort from her sister Susan who is happy to provide a sympathetic ear. Susan is determined to find out the truth about Tom's murder and approaches Dave, Ben's best friend, for information. Dave is uncooperative and tells Susan that Ben knows nothing about Tom's killing.

Ben decides to take matters into his own hands and breaks into Jess's house to search for clues that might clear his name. He finds a diary hidden in a drawer and discovers that Jess was obsessively jealous of Ben's relationship with his wife. Ben is shocked to learn that Jess had even gone as far as spying on them.

Back at home, Ben confronts Christy about Jess's diary and tells her that they need to talk. Christy makes a confession that shakes Ben to his core. She tells him that she had an affair with Dave and that Tom might not be his biological son. Ben is devastated and feels that his entire world has been turned upside down.

The episode ends with Cornell summoning Ben to the police station for a DNA test. Cornell informs Ben that he has arrested Jess and that she has confessed to killing Tom. Ben is incredulous and cannot believe that Jess was capable of such a heinous act. Cornell tells Ben that he needs to consider the possibility that he might be wrong about everything and that Christy might be hiding something.

Overall, the episode is tense and emotionally charged. The story is expertly woven together, and the viewer is left on the edge of their seat, trying to piece together the clues. The Mother is a great episode that keeps the viewer engaged throughout, and it will leave them eagerly anticipating the next installment of this amazing show.
