Sesame Street Season 41 Episode 36 Abby Thinks Oscar Is a Prince

  • November 12, 2010

Abby Cadabby is back with her magical spells and now she's convinced that Oscar the Grouch, the resident grump on Sesame Street, is secretly a prince charming trapped in a curmudgeonly exterior. Episode 36 of Sesame Street's 41st season, "Abby Thinks Oscar Is a Prince," follows Abby as she tries to create the perfect spell to turn Oscar into the prince she believes he is.

The episode begins with Abby and her best friend, Elmo, walking down Sesame Street when they suddenly spot a shiny, red apple. Without thinking twice, Abby reaches out her hand to grab it, but as soon as her fingers touch the apple, she realizes that it's a cursed fruit and it will have consequences.

The curse, as it turns out, is that Abby believes everyone she sees is secretly a fairytale character. She starts seeing Big Bird as a giant crane and Cookie Monster as a hungry ogre, but when she sees Oscar, she stops dead in her tracks. To Abby's eyes, Oscar is no longer a grouch living in a trash can; he's a dashing prince.

Determined to help Oscar break the curse and reveal his true identity, Abby sets out to find the perfect spell. She looks in her spell book, but nothing seems to work. She even tries to snag a potion from the Grouchland Potion Factory, but it's closed for repairs. Finally, Abby decides to create her own spell from scratch.

The rest of the episode is dedicated to Abby's spell-making process. Abby is serious about turning Oscar into the prince she sees in him, so she visits the Enchanted Forest to collect rare ingredients like unicorn hair, frog eyes, and dragon scales. She mixes them all together and tries the spell on Oscar, but instead of turning into a prince, he becomes a giant, lumpy frog!

Trying again and again, Abby soon realizes that the curse cannot be broken with a magical spell, but with a simple act of kindness. Instead of trying to change Oscar into someone else, she simply needs to accept him for who he is and show him that he is loved.

With this realization, Abby sets out to make Oscar feel extra special. She throws him a surprise party, decorates his trash can with balloons, and even bakes him his favorite cookie recipe. The de-grouchification process is slow but steady, and in the end, Oscar realizes that maybe he's not a prince, but he's still loved by the people around him.

"Abby Thinks Oscar Is a Prince" is a fun, heartwarming episode of Sesame Street that teaches valuable lessons on acceptance, friendship, and the dangers of cursed apples. Kids and grown-ups alike will enjoy watching Abby's antics and Oscar's unexpected transformation. With its colorful characters, catchy songs, and playful storytelling, Sesame Street remains one of the most beloved and educational shows for children of all ages. This episode is a perfect example of why.
