Charlie Haverford is a former magician turned psychic who, after a head injury, starts experiencing strange visions and becomes a con artist pretending to be a psychic. In Shut Eye season 1 episode 4, titled "The Tower - Reversed," Charlie has a vision of a tower crumbling, which he interprets as a warning of impending danger. Meanwhile, the head of the Romani crime family, Rita, asks Charlie to help her son, Nick, who is being held captive by a rival gang.
Charlie's vision leads him to a seedy motel where he discovers that Nick has been taken hostage by a man named Freddy, who is demanding a ransom from Rita. Charlie convinces Freddy to release Nick, but when he returns him to Rita, she reveals that she doesn't have the money to pay the ransom and tasks Charlie with finding a way to come up with it.
In the midst of this, Charlie's wife, Linda, is struggling to come to terms with the reality of their situation and begins to hallucinate that her husband is cheating on her. She confides in a coworker, Dr. White, and the two begin to grow closer.
As Charlie tries to figure out how to come up with the ransom money, he turns to his sister-in-law, Gina, for help. She introduces him to a wealthy client, Nadine, who is looking to get in touch with her deceased mother. Charlie initially refuses the job, but when Nadine offers him a large sum of money, he agrees.
Charlie's reading for Nadine raises more questions than answers, leaving her disappointed and angry. But when she confronts him, Charlie has a second vision that gives him a new perspective on her situation and leads him to make a startling discovery.
