Clone Force 99, aka "The Bad Batch," must navigate a rapidly changing landscape in the aftermath of the Clone Wars, as their unique set of skills prove both valuable and complicated. In "Cut and Run," the second episode of the series, the team sets out to find an old friend, Cut Lawquane.
Cut is a clone who defected from the army and settled down with a family on a remote planet. When the Bad Batch receives a distress signal from Cut, they quickly respond and travel to the planet Salucami. Once there, they find that Cut's family is in danger and that they might need the help of the Bad Batch to survive.
The episode focuses on the team's interactions with Cut's family, as they navigate the differences that exist between the "normal" life that Cut has chosen and the life of a clone trooper. Additionally, while on the planet, the Bad Batch finds that their presence has attracted the attention of the newly formed Empire's forces and that they must evade and outsmart the troops in order to protect Cut and his family.
Throughout the episode, viewers are given insight into the individual personalities of the members of the Bad Batch and how those personalities play out in different situations. The team's leader, Hunter, takes the lead in dealing with Cut's family and trying to figure out how best to help them. Tech, the team's technological expert, attempts to locate the source of the distress signal and uncover any other threats that might endanger them. Wrecker, the team's muscle, forms a bond with Cut's children and demonstrates a softer, kinder side. And finally, Crosshair, the team's sharpshooter, remains stoic and professional, despite the tensions and difficulties they face on the planet.
Overall, "Cut and Run" is a strong follow-up to the series premiere, as it continues to develop both the characters and the overarching storyline. It is an episode that effectively blends action, humor, and heart, as we see the Bad Batch struggle to navigate this new world of Imperial domination and figure out how best to use their skills to help those in need.
