Ep 3. The Wynne-Jones Family

  • September 12, 2007

The fourth season of Supernanny UK brings another episode, titled "The Wynne-Jones Family," where the modern family is in a dreadful situation with badly behaved children, and parents' relationships with each other and their offspring are wavering. The titular family comprises Sarah and Glyn, who have four children together: eight-year-old Gracie, seven-year-old Evie, four-year-old Aleck, and two-year-old Summer.

From the very beginning of this episode, it becomes clear that Sarah and Glyn are both exhausted and frustrated, struggling to discipline their four children. The kids run wild, throwing tantrums, throwing items at each other, and not following any rules.

Their daughter, Gracie, who is the eldest of the four siblings, is the most problematic one as she screams, hits, and bites her sisters. She even pees on the floor and wipes it on the walls. The parents are at a loss about how to handle her, and every day is an exhausting endeavor just to keep control of their children's behaviour.

Furthermore, Sarah and Glynn are worried about their relationship, and it's apparent that the stress from their children's behaviour is putting a strain on them. The parents feel like they've lost all control and can't seem to move forward together.

That's where Supernanny steps in and tries to bring some discipline and structure to the Wynne-Jones family. She sits with Sarah and Glyn to have a one-on-one discussion about their parenting technique, their communication skills, and most importantly, their problem with the eldest daughter, Gracie.

Supernanny observes the family life and quickly realizes that the parents need to balance their children's demanding needs with reasonable boundaries. She tries to make them understand that consistency is key to the children's discipline and that applying a solid routine will help them immensely.

To rein in the misbehaving children, Supernanny sets up various new rules - from star charts and calm down places to time-outs and rewarding good behaviour. She also shows the parents how to keep a calm and composed face throughout their children's outbursts and to use positive reinforcement to communicate with their children in a better way.

Supernanny also shows the parents how to follow through consequences when their children don’t behave. She gives examples of natural and logical consequences to their behaviour.

Throughout this episode, Supernanny provides Sarah and Glyn with much-needed emotional support and helps them navigate their worries as parents. The parents also promise to work on their communication skills and their efforts to parent their children together as a team.

The episode concludes with a remarkable transformation of the Wynne-Jones family. Although the children remain lively and active, Sarah and Glyn are now able to manage their behaviour effectively, and Gracie has made the biggest change of all. She no longer throws tantrums, yells at her parents and siblings, or pees on the floor. The parents are delighted with the new dynamic in their family and are grateful to Supernanny for her guidance.

Overall, this episode of Supernanny UK season 4 is an insightful watch, giving parents a lot of techniques to deal with their children's behaviour and how to communicate with them positively. It demonstrates how patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement can work wonders for even the most disobedient children.
