When God told Abraham that he and his wife Sarah would have a son, Abraham was astounded, for Sarah was long past child-bearing age. Still, God had assigned Abraham to be the "father of many nations." Overjoyed at the birth of Isaac, Abraham cannot believe when God commands him to sacrifice his son.
