Ep 1. Donkeys Have Souls, Too

In the first ever episode of The Amazing Race, teams set off from New York City and head to Africa for the adventure of a lifetime. The race begins with a grueling challenge involving donkeys - teams must navigate their way through a donkey market and choose two donkeys to carry them across a desert oasis.

Once teams arrive in South Africa, they face a Roadblock challenge that involves bungee jumping off a bridge 700 feet in the air. One member of each team must make the leap, while their partner watches from below. The tension builds as some contestants feel the fear of heights and struggle to make the jump.

Next, teams must use a map and compass to navigate through the wilderness on foot, carrying their personal belongings and limited water supplies. Along the way, they must find and collect three ostrich eggs before completing a Detour challenge.

The Detour presents teams with a choice between two tasks: either roll giant cheese wheels down a steep hill or search through a huge pile of salt to find a small, plastic airplane. Teams must use their teamwork and physical abilities to complete their chosen task.

Finally, teams reach the Pit Stop, where they are greeted by host Phil Keoghan. The last team to arrive at the Pit Stop is eliminated from the race.

Throughout the episode, viewers are introduced to the eleven teams of two competing for the grand prize of $1,000,000 - including identical twin sisters, married parents, and a pair of frat brothers. The teams' personalities, strategies, and conflicts are showcased as they take on the challenges of the race.
