  • April 29, 2014

The Daytripper is a travel documentary series hosted by Chet Garner that follows his explorations of different Texas towns. In season 5 episode 10, Garner visits Orange, TX, a quaint town known for its citrus farming history and proximity to the Sabine River.

Garner begins his trip by visiting the Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, a 252-acre garden that showcases the flora and fauna of the region. As he wanders through the gardens, Garner learns about the various ecosystems, including the bayou, meadows, and wetlands. He also explores the sculpture garden, which features works by local artists.

Next, Garner heads to the Stark Museum of Art, which houses an impressive collection of American Western art and artifacts. He gets a glimpse into the history of the region, including the story of the oil boom and the impact it had on Orange. Garner is struck by the beauty and richness of the art, which depicts scenes from the Old West and Native American culture.

For lunch, Garner stops by JB's Barbecue, a family-owned restaurant that has been serving up delicious smoked meats since 1980. He samples a variety of dishes, including brisket, ribs, and sausage, and meets the owner and pitmaster, who shares the secrets of perfect barbecue.

After lunch, Garner visits the historic waterfront district, which was once a hub for shipping and commerce. He explores the Sabine River, which separates Texas and Louisiana, and learns about the role it played in the town's development. He also visits the Stark House, a 19th-century mansion that offers a glimpse into the lives of the wealthy family who once inhabited it.

Finally, Garner heads to the Orange County Farmers' Market, which features fresh produce from local farmers. He speaks with the vendors and learns about the challenges and joys of farming in the region. He also tries some of the fruits and vegetables, including oranges (of course!) and other seasonal offerings.

Throughout his trip to Orange, Garner is struck by the warmth and friendliness of the people he meets. He discovers a town that is proud of its history and rich in culture and tradition. The episode is a tribute to the unique beauty and charm of small-town Texas.
