Almost all of the show was filmed on a set replicating the small annex used to house Jewish families during the Nazi occupation and Dutch collaboration in World War II Amsterdam. The Diary of Anne Frank begins in June 1942 with the 13th birthday party of Annelies Frank, a German national who was exiled from her home country when the Nazi's took control of Germany. As the Nazi's have now seized control of Amterdam in the Netherlands the Frank family are making plans to hide themselves away and avoid transportation to a concentration camp. Ann, her sister Margot and parents Otto and Edith soon find themselves hidden in a small annex of the spice factory run by Otto; to keep themselves hidden and avoiding detection the family must spend their days in silence to avoid the majority of the staff knowning of their hiding place. Another Jewish family, the Van Daan's aoon arrive in the small rooms to be hidden by the few office staff trusted by Otto Frank. A dentist, Mr. Dussel also joins the families and tensions begin to grow in the confined space and extremes of the Dutch weather. Unlike other versions of the story of Anne Frank this production focuses on Anne as a normal teenager experiencing puberty and fighting with her family. The family manage to survive until August 4th 1944 when they are discovered by German and Dutch authorities and forcibly taken to concentration camps where Anne and her sister, Margot died of Typhus. Otto Frank was the only member of the family to survive and published Anne's diary after the War was completed.
