  • December 2, 2010

The Fairy Jobmother season 1 episode 5, titled "Wolfe Family," follows the story of the Wolfe family who are in desperate need of some help from the job fairy. The family members are struggling with unemployment, debt, and hopelessness.

The mother, Karen Wolfe, lost her job as a care worker three years ago and hasn't had steady work since. Her husband, Andy Wolfe, has been out of work for six months and is having a hard time finding a job given his previous criminal record. Their eldest daughter, Chantelle, is 19 and has been struggling to find a job that suits her. And their youngest daughter, Paris, is only 14 but wants to help her family by getting a job.

The episode begins with Karen explaining her situation to the job fairy, Hayley Taylor. Karen feels like she's at a dead end and doesn't know what to do to improve her family's situation. Hayley senses the hopelessness in Karen's voice and decides to give her some tough love. She tells Karen that she needs to be more proactive in her job search and that she can't just sit around waiting for opportunities to come to her.

Next, Hayley meets with Andy. She discovers that Andy has been out of work for six months because he was recently released from prison. He's been trying to find employment, but he's been unsuccessful due to his criminal record. Hayley tells Andy that he needs to be honest with employers about his past and highlight the skills and experiences he's gained over the years.

Hayley then meets with the daughters, Chantelle and Paris, to assess their job prospects. Chantelle has been working part-time in retail but hates her job. She tells Hayley that she wants to work in childcare but doesn't have any qualifications. Hayley advises Chantelle to start taking courses in childcare and gain some experience by volunteering in her spare time.

Paris, on the other hand, is only 14 and legally can't work yet. Hayley tells Paris that she can still help her family by doing odd jobs around the neighbourhood to earn some extra money.

Hayley then meets with the entire family to implement a plan of action. She advises Karen to start looking for work outside her usual field and to consider taking on temporary or part-time roles to make ends meet. She tells Andy to be upfront with employers about his past and to highlight the valuable skills he's gained through his experiences.

Hayley also helps Chantelle by setting up volunteer work at a local childcare centre and connecting her with an employment agency that specializes in childcare roles.

Throughout the episode, Hayley is tough but compassionate. She recognizes that the Wolfe family is in a tough spot and that they're doing the best they can with the resources they have. She encourages them to be more proactive in their job search and to take advantage of any opportunities that come their way.

The Wolfe family is grateful for Hayley's help and guidance. They feel empowered and motivated to take control of their job search and to work towards a better future. The episode ends with the family feeling hopeful and optimistic about what's to come.
