Forty is the fifth episode of the fourth season of the American family drama television series, The Fosters. The episode aired on July 11, 2016, on Freeform. The series follows the life of the Foster family, a multi-ethnic family of foster and biological children being raised by two lesbian mothers, Stef and Lena.

In this episode, Callie struggles to find a passion for an art project assigned to her by her art teacher, Mr. Timothy. She finds herself at odds with herself as she looks for something that inspires her. Meanwhile, Mariana is in the middle of a very complicated situation involving her ex-boyfriend, Matt, and her newly found love, Logan. She is caught between the two men who both have strong feelings for her, and she is trying to find a way to navigate this tricky situation.

Elsewhere, Lena is continuing with her campaign for the school board. She is putting in a lot of effort to make sure that she gets elected and is not finding it easy. She is finding great solace in the support she is getting from Stef, who is seemingly her rock throughout the whole process. Stef is also busy with her own career, dealing with a case of a man that has stalked a woman and is charged with attempting to kidnap her.

In this episode, we also get to see more of Brandon's life outside of the Fosters' household. He is taking his music career seriously and is recording a demo tape. His relationship with Cortney is also front and center in this episode as she has been having troubles with her ex-husband and is trying to navigate her way in her new relationship with Brandon.

One of the highlights of this episode is the way the different storylines intersect. The central theme of the episode is the concept of being true to oneself. This is evident in the struggles of the different characters as they try to find their path and stay true to who they are.

The performances in this episode are excellent. Maia Mitchell, who plays the role of Callie, is particularly outstanding. She does a great job portraying the frustrations of a young girl trying to figure herself out. Cierra Ramirez, who plays Mariana, also shows great range as she tries to navigate the complicated situation she finds herself in.

Overall, Forty is a great episode in the series. It is grounded in reality and deals with a lot of issues that young people go through. The writers do an excellent job of weaving different storylines together and keeping the viewer engaged. It is not an episode that has a lot of action, but it showcases the character development that has made the show so popular. This episode is a great illustration of the show's appeal - the ability to tackle serious issues with grace and sensitivity.
