Ep 3. Jimmy 5 Is Alive

In the third episode of the third season of The Goldbergs, titled "Jimmy 5 Is Alive," the beloved family sitcom tackles the classic sci-fi film, Short Circuit. The episode opens with Adam and his father, Murray, reminiscing about watching the movie together when Adam was a kid. Murray doesn't remember it at all, but Adam insists it's the movie where "the robot becomes friends with the boy."

Meanwhile, Erica has started her senior year of high school and is feeling the pressure to decide what she wants to do with her life. She goes to her guidance counselor, Ms. Cinoman, played brilliantly by AJ Michalka's real-life mother, and tells her she wants to apply to college for art. Ms. Cinoman quickly shuts down Erica's dreams, telling her that artists don't make money and that she should aim for something more practical, like accounting or teaching. Erica is crushed.

Back at home, Beverly discovers that one of Murray's old electronics projects, Jimmy 4, is still lying around in the basement. She decides to surprise him by fixing it up, but ends up accidentally turning it into an advanced, talking robot named Jimmy 5. The Goldbergs are thrilled to have a real-life Short Circuit robot in their midst, but when they realize Jimmy 5 is too advanced to be legal, they panic and try to figure out how to get rid of him.

Meanwhile, Adam has convinced Murray to rewatch Short Circuit with him, and is disappointed to realize that the movie might not be as good as he remembers. In fact, Murray falls asleep halfway through. Adam is determined to prove that the movie is a classic, and decides to use Jimmy 5 to reenact some of the film's most iconic scenes.

As the episode progresses, Beverly tries to figure out how to make Jimmy 5 disappear, while the rest of the family has fun playing with him and bonding over their favorite scenes from Short Circuit. Erica, still feeling lost about her future, tells Adam that she wishes she could be as passionate about something as he is about movies. Adam suggests that Erica try making her own movie, and helps her come up with a concept for a horror film called "Psycho Prom."

In the end, Erica decides to follow her dreams and applies to art school, while Murray comes to appreciate the significance of Short Circuit in his relationship with Adam. And as for Jimmy 5? Well, you'll just have to watch the episode to find out what happens to him. But suffice it to say, it's a heartwarming and hilarious journey that will leave you feeling good about life.
