Ep 19. A Night To Remember

Beverly is thrilled to have Erica home for college break. She wants to spend as much time as possible with her daughter, even if it means commandeering Erica's calendar and shopping for clothes that Erica doesn't really want. Barry has something else to be excited about. A school dance is coming up, and he thinks he has a chance to impress a girl named Ren. Adam is also going to the dance with Dana. He's nervous about the idea of wearing a suit, but Murray encourages him to suck it up and dress for the occasion. Lainey decides to volunteer to be the DJ and promises Beverly that there will be '70s music.

The day of the dance arrives. Beverly has created a detailed schedule for the evening, starting with a meal at a restaurant called Oat-yay On-cay. It's a salad bar where Beverly discovers her true ambition in life - to be the head salad tosser. Erica, however, is slightly embarrassed by her mother's enthusiasm. At the school, Adam and Dana are disappointed to discover that the DJ seems to have forgotten about his promise of '70s music. Barry's night is going even worse since Ren has already left the dance due to a bad potluck assignment.

Murray and Beverly show up at the dance to check on their sons. Beverly can't resist the urge to intervene, and she forces Lainey to play '70s music. However, the students aren't interested in hearing her music, and soon Beverly is butting heads with Lainey and the faculty chaperones. Meanwhile, Adam and Dana are enjoying the slow dance, but Dana is soon disappointed when Adam starts talking about Star Wars during the romantic moment. They reconcile quickly, and Adam asks Dana to dance again.

Barry is feeling bad about his night until Murray gives him a pep talk. He tells Barry that rejection is just a part of life and that he should feel proud of himself for putting himself out there and asking Ren to the dance in the first place. The pep talk works, and Barry decides to make the most of the situation. He leads the students in a dance-off to '80s music. In the end, everybody has a great time, and Beverly manages to embarrass her children only a little bit.

The episode ends with Murray telling Beverly that he likes spending time with her, but he wants to do it his way. Beverly listens and they compromise by doing things they both enjoy, like going to the movies. Erica decides to stay home and watch a movie with her mother, pleased that Beverly has learned to let her children make their own decisions. Adam and Dana end the night with one last dance.
