Ep 3. Red Velvet If You Please

Jim and Jeannie's daughter, Marre, has her heart set on having a red velvet cake for her fifth birthday party, but Jeannie is determined to make a healthier alternative. Meanwhile, Jim's friend and fellow comedian Dave comes to town for a show, and Jim begins to feel envious of his success. As tensions rise between the couple and Jim's envy threatens to ruin the party, they must work together to make Marre's birthday a memorable one.

As the episode opens, we see Jim and Jeannie in the kitchen, trying out different healthy cake recipes in an attempt to appease Marre's request for a red velvet cake. Jeannie is insistent on using beets instead of food coloring to make the cake red, much to Jim's disbelief. He argues that kids don't care about eating healthy and should be allowed to enjoy a sweet treat on their birthday. Jeannie counters that it's their job as parents to make sure their children eat well and make healthy choices.

As they continue to bicker over the cake, we see Jim receiving a call from his friend Dave, who is coming to town for a show. Dave is a successful comedian who Jim used to perform with in Chicago, but now feels overshadowed by. While Jim is excited to see his friend, he can't help feeling envious of Dave's success and wonders if he made the right choice in leaving Chicago for New York.

As the day of Marre's party approaches, tensions continue to rise between Jim and Jeannie over the cake, with Jeannie refusing to back down on her insistence to make a healthy dessert. Jim becomes increasingly frustrated and begins to feel like he's being left out of the planning for the party. To make matters worse, he discovers that Dave has been booked for a late night talk show, adding to Jim's feelings of inferiority.

As the party begins, we see Marre's excitement as she blows out the candles on her cake. Unbeknownst to her, Jeannie has hidden a small piece of red velvet cake beneath a layer of healthy cake, allowing Marre to enjoy the traditional birthday dessert without compromising her health. Jim is touched by Jeannie's compromise and grateful to see his daughter's happy reaction to the cake.

As the party continues, Jim's envy towards Dave reaches a boiling point, and the two have a heated argument over their careers. However, they soon realize that their friendship is more important than success and make amends. Meanwhile, Jim and Jeannie also have a heart-to-heart about their differences and come to a better understanding of each other's perspectives.

In the end, Marre's party is a success and Jim is reminded of what's most important in life. This episode brings up the complex issues of parental responsibility, envy, and compromise, and ultimately shows the importance of communication and working together in a relationship.
