Doug and Carrie are at a family wedding and while waiting for it to start they wander off, exploring the garden of the estate where the wedding is taking place. They stumble upon a hidden area where they find a beautiful garden with a romantic gazebo, and they decide to sit and enjoy the view while they wait for the wedding to start. As they sit together, they reflect on their own marriage and begin to feel like they need to put more effort into their relationship.
After the wedding, they arrive home and decide to try and create their own secret garden to recapture the feeling they had in the one they found at the wedding. They start to clean up their backyard and make plans for a beautiful garden, but their visions don't match up. Carrie wants a relaxing oasis, while Doug wants a more functional space with a grill and sports equipment.
They decide to compromise and create a space that incorporates both of their needs, but things quickly spiral out of control when their plans start to cost more than they expected. Doug tries to cut corners and do things himself, but ends up making a mess of their backyard. Carrie enlists the help of Arthur, who has a green thumb, but he only makes things worse by planting a mysterious plant that takes over part of their yard.
Doug and Carrie start to bicker and argue, and their attempts at creating a beautiful garden turn into a disaster. They finally realize that they need to work together and come up with a plan that fits both of their needs. They enlist the help of a landscaper, and with his guidance, they are able to create a beautiful and functional backyard that they both love.
In the end, Doug and Carrie realize that their marriage is like a garden – it takes time, effort, and compromise to create something beautiful. They make a promise to each other to put more effort into their relationship, and to never stop working on it.
