In The Last Man On Earth season 2 episode 13, entitled "Fish in the Dish," the survivors continue to struggle in a world without human infrastructure. Phil Miller (played by Will Forte) and his ragtag group of survivors in Tucson, Arizona are still figuring out how to survive without the basic amenities we take for granted. In this particular episode, we see the cast trying to catch fish for dinner.

Phil and his friends are all feeling the consequences of their bad choices. They’ve taken so many things for granted. They’ve abused power, betrayed trust, and squandered resources that they could have otherwise used to improve their lives. They’ve been behaving in selfish ways that have caused more harm than good. They’ve made enemies, lost friends, and struggle to work together as a team. But now, they’re realizing that they have to change if they want to survive.

The episode opens with Phil, Todd (Mel Rodriguez), and Gail (Mary Steenburgen) discussing their dwindling food supply. They’ve been living off a diet of canned goods for much too long and they’re desperate for fresh food. Phil suggests that they go fishing, but he’s not exactly confident in his ability to catch a fish. Nevertheless, his friends agree to give it a try.

The next scene shows the group trying to catch fish with an array of hilarious makeshift fishing tools. Carol (Kristen Schaal) uses a coat hanger; Melissa (January Jones) uses her bra as bait; and Phil uses a plastic container as a fishing pole. Needless to say, they’re not exactly successful.

As the group debates about whether to give up or not, Phil spots something in the water. It’s a fish! And it’s a big one! The group starts to get excited as they watch it swim around in the water. Phil tries to catch it with his makeshift fishing pole, but fails miserably.

Then, out of nowhere, Mike (Jason Sudeikis) appears. He survived his journey to space and has returned home to Earth. The group is overjoyed to see him and welcomes him back with open arms. They quickly fill him in on everything that’s been happening and ask him to help them catch the fish.

Mike takes a more strategic approach. He suggests that they make a "fish trap" out of a plastic container, some string, and some bait. The group agrees to give it a try and sets the trap in the water.

While they wait for the fish to bite, they start talking to Mike about his experience in space. He tells them about his journey and how he survived for all those months alone in space. He also talks more about his relationships with his family members. The group is touched by his story and bonds with him even more.

Just as they’re about to give up hope, they see that the fish has been caught! They’re ecstatic and decide to cook it up for dinner that night. But they’re not exactly skilled chefs, so they have to get creative with the preparation. They season the fish with some spices they found and grill it over an open flame. It’s not exactly a gourmet meal, but it’s fresh and delicious.

As they sit around the fire and eat their fish, they talk about how grateful they are for each other. They may not have everything they want, but they have each other and that’s something to be thankful for. They also talk about how they need to start making better choices if they want to survive in this new world. They need to work together, be kind to each other, and most importantly, never take anything for granted.

The episode ends with the group looking up at the stars, as Mike tells them stories about his time in space. They may be the last people on Earth, but they’re not alone. They have each other and they have hope for a better future.
