The Last Wave is a fascinating drama mystery from France 2, starring Richard Chamberlain, Olivia Hamnett, and David Gulpilil. It was first aired in 1977, and it intrigued audiences with its unique storyline and artistic direction. Set in Sydney, Australia, the story revolves around a young lawyer, David Burton (played by Chamberlain), who is assigned to defend a group of indigenous Australians accused of murder. The accused, however, speak no English and prove difficult to communicate with. As David immerses himself in their culture, he experiences a series of vivid dreams and strange occurrences that suggest a deeper, supernatural connection between the accused and the land.

As David delves deeper into the mystery, he realizes that he himself is somehow connected to the strange forces at work. With the help of his client Chris Lee (played by Gulpilil), he attempts to unravel the secrets of the Dreamtime and solve the mystery behind the strange murders.

Along the way, David is aided by his wife, Annie (played by Hamnett). The couple's relationship also undergoes strain as they confront the otherworldly forces that threaten to destroy them.

The Last Wave is a haunting and atmospheric production, blending surreal imagery with gripping drama. It straddles the line between thriller and spiritual allegory, making it a unique viewing experience. The mystery unfolds slowly, building tension and keeping audiences guessing until the very end.

Richard Chamberlain delivers a powerful performance as David, a typically rational lawyer who finds himself questioning everything he knows about the world. Olivia Hamnett is equally compelling as David's wife Annie, whose skepticism is tested as the supernatural forces become increasingly undeniable. David Gulpilil, a well-known Indigenous Australian actor, brings depth and authenticity to his role as the mysterious Chris Lee.

The Last Wave was directed by Peter Weir, who is known for his signature style of blending surrealism and realism. Weir's use of symbolism and his masterful control of lighting and sound create an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere that adds to the tension of the plot.

The show was praised for its depiction of Indigenous Australian culture and mythology, which had rarely been explored in mainstream media at the time. It was also lauded for its cinematography and the way it captured Sydney as a complex, diverse city.

In conclusion, The Last Wave is a mesmerizing and thought-provoking mystery drama, filled with stunning imagery and nuanced performances. Its supernatural elements and exploration of indigenous beliefs make it a fascinating, enlightening journey. The Last Wave was well-received by critics and audiences alike, and it remains a unique and powerful addition to the world of film and television.
