Ep 2. Being Sutton

Sutton Mercer, the protagonist of The Lying Game, continues to suss out the reasons behind her identical twin Emma's unexpected arrival in their hometown. Emma has taken Sutton's place in her wealthy adoptive family and cozy life, while Sutton has gone on the lam to find out what happened to their birth mother.

In "Being Sutton," the second episode of season one, Sutton finally gets a chance to communicate with Emma, with the help of her childhood friend and secret crush Ethan. Ethan and Sutton were romantic partners until he broke up with her for the new girl in school, leading to the rift between Sutton and Emma that has defined their relationship.

Ethan enlists the help of his sister Laurel to read Sutton's texts to Emma and get information about Emma's past. Meanwhile, Sutton convinces Emma to meet up with her at the abandoned cabin their mother used to hide out in. At the cabin, Sutton tries to get answers from Emma about their mother, but Emma is reluctant to open up.

Sutton becomes even more suspicious of Emma's motives when she sees her wearing a necklace that belonged to their mother. Emma had claimed that she didn't remember anything about their birth mother, but Sutton wonders if she has been lying.

Back in the Mercer household, Emma struggles to fit in with her new family. She is frustrated by her adoptive mother Kristin's overbearing behavior and feels uncomfortable around her step-siblings. She also learns that her adoptive father Ted is running for political office and worries that her presence will negatively impact his campaign.

To make matters worse, Emma discovers that the Mercer family is deeply involved in the local country club scene, which has strict rules about behavior and dress. She realizes that her converse sneakers and laid-back attitude are not going to cut it.

With the help of her new friend Madeline, Emma tries to navigate the social scene at the country club. However, she finds herself at odds with Sutton's former best friend Char and her clique of mean girls. Char seems to have it out for Emma and makes snide remarks about her clothes and background.

In the final scene, Sutton overhears Char and her friends talking about Emma and how they plan to humiliate her at an upcoming party. Sutton realizes that she needs to do something to help her sister.

"Being Sutton" is a classic second episode, setting up the tension and conflicts for the rest of the season. The audience is left wondering about Emma's true motivations and who might be behind the mystery of their birth mother. Emma's struggles to fit in at the Mercer household and the country club lend a fish-out-of-water aspect to the show.
