When Tom Miller (played by Will Arnett) decides to move out of his parents' house and get a divorce, he unknowingly sets off a chain of events which bring his entire family closer together. In season 1 episode 2, titled "Plot Twists", the Millers are still finding their footing as a slightly more functional family unit.

The episode opens with Tom and his father, Nathan (played by Beau Bridges), bonding over cheeseburgers and awkward conversation. Despite Nathan's attempts to keep things light, he can't help but express concern for his son's recent life changes. Tom brushes off his father's worries, insisting that he's happy and that his marriage was in trouble long before he took the first steps toward divorce.

Meanwhile, Tom's sister Debbie (played by Jayma Mays) is struggling to connect with her teenage daughter Mikayla (played by Eve Moon). Mikayla is rebellious, sarcastic, and generally uninterested in anything her mother has to say. When Debbie tries to discuss Mikayla's recent detention, things escalate quickly, with Mikayla storming off and Debbie feeling at a loss.

Later, the Millers all gather at Nathan's house for a family dinner. Tom invites his soon-to-be ex-wife Allison (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) to join them, much to the surprise of everyone else. The tension is palpable as Allison awkwardly attempts to fit in with the family, while Nathan's new girlfriend (played by Mary Lynn Rajskub) looks on disapprovingly.

Throughout the course of the episode, several plot twists arise which complicate things for the Millers even further. Without giving away too much, it's safe to say that this episode lives up to its name. Each twist brings the family members closer together in unexpected ways, revealing secrets and vulnerabilities that they might not have otherwise shared.

One of the standout moments of the episode comes when Tom and Allison share a vulnerable conversation about their marriage and its eventual dissolution. It's a touching scene, made all the more poignant by the fact that it reveals just how much these two people meant to each other at one point in time.

Another memorable scene involves Nathan's attempts to impress his girlfriend with his culinary skills. As he proudly presents his homemade pasta, she takes a bite and asks, "Did you salt this?" When Nathan admits that he forgot, she responds with a derisive, "Wow." It's a small moment, but it's one that perfectly captures the awkwardness and discomfort that often arises when couples try to impress each other's interests or hobbies.

Overall, season 1 episode 2 of The Millers is a solid entry in the show's first season. It manages to balance humor with heart, delivering a few laugh-out-loud moments while still exploring the complicated relationships between the Miller family members. If you're a fan of family-centric sitcoms with a bit of bite, this show might just be right up your alley.
