Mma Precious Ramotswe, a woman in her early thirties, is struck by personal tragedy when her father, a miner who worked in the copper mines of Zambia, passed away. After inheriting some money, Mma Ramotswe decides to honor her father's memory by fulfilling his wishes. One of these wishes was to invest the money in a business venture.

Mma Ramotswe decides to start her own private investigation agency, the first of its kind in Botswana. She shares her plan with her best friend, Mma Grace Makutsi, who is impressed by Mma Ramotswe's courage and determination. They both agree that she should name her agency the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.

With no prior experience in detective work, Mma Ramotswe places an ad in a local newspaper, advertising her services to the public. To her surprise, people start coming to her for help with their problems, ranging from missing persons to cheating spouses.
