The Real O'Neals is an American sitcom that premiered on ABC in March 2016. The show offers a hilarious look at a loving, typically-chaotic Irish-Catholic family trying to look perfect to the outside world while struggling with their own secrets in their Chicago home. The series is created by Casey Johnson, David Windsor, and Joshua Sternin.

In the first episode, titled "Pilot," we meet the O'Neals, a seemingly perfect family with three children, all attending Catholic school in Chicago. Eileen, the mother, is the president of the church's support group, "The Lady of Perpetual Sorrow," and has her life planned for her kids. She wants Kenny, the middle child, to become a priest, Shannon, the youngest, to become a nun, and Jimmy, the eldest, to become a football star. She's convinced that the family's perfect image depends on keeping her children on the righteous path.

Kenny, the show's protagonist, is a teenage boy struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. He announces to his family that he's gay during the opening scene and has been hiding it from them for a long time. His parents and siblings are surprised by the news and struggle to accept it, especially Eileen, who sees homosexuality as forbidden in the Catholic Church. The revelation sends the family into a tailspin, and they must learn to accept Kenny for who he is.

Meanwhile, Jimmy, the family's golden boy, is struggling to keep his image up after losing his ability to play football due to injury. Shannon, the youngest, is running an illegal charity and taking advantage of the church's resources for her own causes. In their own ways, each member of the family is hiding a secret from the others.

The show is hilarious, poking fun at the traditional norms surrounding a conservative Catholic family and their secrets. Despite the dramatic reveal, "Pilot" manages to keep the humor alive. The writing is sharp, witty, and filled with puns and pop-culture references that will make you laugh. The performances from the cast are great, especially Martha Plimpton, who plays Eileen, and Noah Galvin, who plays Kenny.

The family dynamic is realistic and relatable, and the characters have real depth, which helps the audience become invested in their stories. Each member of the family has their own unique quirks – Shannon's rebelliousness and desire for attention, Jimmy's need for perfection, and Eileen's need to control everything, including her family. They all feel like real people, and their faults make them more likable and endearing.

There's no doubt that The Real O'Neals is a hilarious comedy that tackles heavy and sensitive topics with humor and grace. The show offers an intimate and realistic look at the lives of a Catholic family who struggles to keep up a perfect image. With clever writing, a talented cast, and all the right ingredients for a successful sitcom, The Real O'Neals season 1 episode 1, "Pilot," is a must-watch.
