After being shot to death, a small-time crook named Rocky Valentine finds himself in a strange and luxurious apartment with an impeccably dressed man named Pip. At first, Rocky thinks he's in heaven, but soon realizes that he's in some kind of afterlife. Pip offers Rocky all kinds of amenities and facilities that he never knew before. Rocky can have anything he wants, any woman he desires, and never has to worry about money or bothering about consequences.

Rocky is initially thrilled with his new existence. Pip seems courteous, friendly and willing to help. However, as the days go by, Rocky begins to feel a twinge of boredom. Everything is easy for him, and he doesn't feel like there's any real challenge to his surroundings anymore. Frustrated with his lack of purpose, Rocky realizes that he needs to feel alive again and tries to convince Pip to let him leave the apartment.

However, Pip won't let Rocky leave and tells him that he can have anything he desires inside the apartment. By this point, Rocky is convinced that he's in hell and begins to believe that he's there to be punished. In a moment of desperation, Rocky breaks down and begs Pip to let him out. Pip finally agrees but leaves Rocky with a parting gift that changes the way that he looks at the world.
