In the opening episode of the 1970s British sci-fi series UFO, titled "Identified," we are introduced to a secret organization called SHADO (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organization) that is tasked with defending Earth against an alien invasion that has already begun.

The episode begins with a commercial plane flying over the Atlantic Ocean when suddenly it is intercepted by an unidentified flying object that shoots it down, killing all on board. The wreckage is discovered by SHADO, and they decipher that it was a deliberate attack by alien beings.

Enter Commander Ed Straker (played by Ed Bishop), the chief of SHADO, who is briefed on the situation and the plan to intercept and destroy the alien UFOs. We learn that Earth has been under attack by these extraterrestrials for some time, but they operate quietly, abducting humans and using them for their own purposes.

As part of the SHADO defense plan, the organization has a secret moon base where they launch their interceptors to confront the aliens. We are introduced to two of the main characters in the episode, Colonel Paul Foster (played by Michael Billington), a pilot who is being recruited to join SHADO, and Lieutenant Gay Ellis (played by Gabrielle Drake), the base operations controller.

While on a test run, Foster and his fellow pilot are attacked by an alien spacecraft, and Foster crashes on the moon's surface. Ellis leads the efforts to rescue the stranded pilot while Straker deals with a big reveal, the only way to join SHADO is to have undergone a transplant. Eventually, Foster is rescued, and he agrees to join SHADO.

The episode climaxes with a dramatic battle between SHADO and the alien spacecraft, as they fight to the death to protect Earth from the alien threat.

Overall, "Identified" sets up the world of UFO perfectly. It introduces us to the organization responsible for defending Earth from alien invasion, which is the series' main premise. It also establishes the tone of the show, which is one of tension, intrigue, and high stakes.

The production design is impressive for its time, with detailed models and practical effects that still hold up today. The scene on the moon is especially well-executed, with the lunar landscape convincingly recreated.

The writing and acting are also strong in "Identified." The characters are well-defined, and the dialogue is tight and efficient. Ed Bishop is the standout in the cast, giving Straker a commanding presence that makes him a compelling lead. Michael Billington and Gabrielle Drake also impress in their roles, and the chemistry between their characters is engaging.

The story itself is exciting and well-paced, with enough action to keep the viewer engaged and enough intrigue to leave them wanting more. It's a great start to the series and a promising opening salvo that shows the potential of the show.

Overall, "Identified" is an excellent episode that sets the tone for the entire series. It's a compelling mix of sci-fi, action, and drama that holds up decades later. If you're a fan of the genre or just love classic TV, "Identified" is a must-see episode that will leave you eager for more.
