UFO was the first live action series from Sylvia and Gerry Anderson with their frequent collaborator Reg Hill, the minds behind the popular "supermarionation" shows of the 1960s. Unlike their previous endeavors, UFO was a serious science fiction action show aimed squarely at an adult audience. Starring Ed Bishop as Commander Straker, head of S.H.A.D.O. (Supreme Headquarters, Alien Defense Organization) an organization engaged in a secret war against alien invaders. The series boasts high production values and excellent miniatures and special effects, as well as surprisingly dark stories for the era. Set in the then-future date of 1980, the sets have a sleep futuristic look reminiscent of spy movies from the same era. The stories take place primarily on Earth, but also on a futuristic Moonbase where the female staff wear never-explained purple wigs and silver jumpsuits, and within an advanced submarine fleet where the uniforms are slightly more conventional
