Undercover Boss UK Season 1 Episode 2 Stephen Martin, Clugston Group

Stephen Martin is the Managing Director of Clugston Group, a large infrastructure and construction company in the UK. In this episode, Stephen goes undercover in his own company to see how his employees are doing and if there are any areas that need improvement.

To start his undercover journey, Stephen transforms into a man named John Smith who is looking for work in construction. He first meets with the HR department to apply for a job. The HR team seem quite efficient and pleasant, but Stephen wonders if everything is as it seems.

Next, Stephen puts on a hard hat and joins a group of workers on a construction site. He quickly learns that the work is physically demanding and has a newfound respect for the workers. The team he joins is tasked with removing asbestos from an old building. The work is particularly challenging and some of the team members express their concern about the safety of the site. Stephen is impressed with how his employees are performing and talks to them about their experience while working at Clugston Group.

During his time on the construction site, Stephen also meets a site manager named Carl who has been with the company for over 20 years. Carl seems very knowledgeable but is struggling with a nagging injury. While chatting, Carl tells Stephen that the company has provided him with support to stay with the team, even though he is not able to do the physical work.

Stephen next spends time with Clugston's transportation team. He works in the dispatch area and realizes that the dispatchers are responsible for coordinating the delivery of everything that is needed on the construction sites. Stephen works alongside the team, and while they all seem very dedicated, he notices room for improvement in communication and efficiency.

Lastly, Stephen spends time with a team of electricians from Clugston's facilities management department. He works with them for a day and learns that the work can be very complex. The electricians take part in a range of tasks, including preventative maintenance and emergency repairs. Stephen meets with one of the senior electricians named Paul, who shares some interesting views on the company and its culture.

Stephen's experience throughout the episode is eye-opening, and he gains a better understanding of the different areas of his company. After going undercover, he decides to make some changes and improvements in the areas where he saw room for growth. Overall, Stephen leaves the experience with a new respect for his employees and their hard work.
