The episode "Denial of Service" from season 1 of Wisdom of the Crowd follows the aftermath of a cyber attack on the Tethics campus, which houses the company behind the real-time crime crowdsourcing app, SOPHE. The attack not only disrupts SOPHE's service but also threatens the safety and privacy of its users.
Jeffrey Tanner, the app developer and CEO of Tethics, is determined to catch the perpetrator and restore SOPHE's service. He enlists the help of his team, including his ex-wife and Chief Security Officer, Alex Hale, and his head engineer, Josh Novak.
As they investigate the attack, they uncover a potential suspect in a former Tethics employee who was fired for stealing company secrets. However, the investigation hits a roadblock when they realize that the suspect's alibi checks out. They soon discover that the suspect was actually the victim of identity theft, with his personal information stolen and used to carry out the attack.
Meanwhile, Jeff attends a prestigious technology conference where he hopes to secure investors for Tethics and SOPHE. However, he faces unexpected challenges as a rival app developer, Mia Hanes, publicly criticizes Jeff and his crowdsourcing approach to crime-solving. Jeff also has to confront his ego when an old acquaintance, billionaire tech mogul Mason Danvers, offers to buy Tethics for a significant sum.
With SOPHE's service still down, Jeff and his team must race against time to find the real perpetrator and prevent any further damage. They must also deal with the consequences of their actions as their pursuit of justice attracts the attention of the FBI and puts them in hot water.
In "Denial of Service," Wisdom of the Crowd tackles issues of cyber attacks, identity theft, and the ethics of technology. It also explores the personal and professional challenges that Jeff and his team face as they work to maintain their idealistic vision for the future of crime-fighting.
