During the dance, a fierce storm comes and destroys the village's Moon altar. The Moon Spirit, who is believed to reside in the altar, is angry and takes its wrath out on the village. Yakari quickly comes up with a plan to create a new altar and gather the village to honor the Moon Spirit. However, by the time they arrive at the new altar, they realize that the Moon Spirit has already begun its journey to the spirit world.

Determined to help the Moon Spirit on its journey, Yakari sets out on horseback to find it. Along the way, he meets a Wolf who agrees to help him find the Moon Spirit. Together, they climb a tall mountain and encounter many obstacles, but ultimately succeed in finding the Moon Spirit. Yakari learns the importance of honoring the spirits, and that even when they are angry and destructive, they still deserve respect and reverence.
