Year of the Rabbit is a British television series that aired on Channel 4 in 2019. The series is set in Victorian London and follows Detective Inspector Eli Rabbit, played by Matt Berry, as he solves crimes with the help of his sidekicks, Detective Sergeant Wilbur Strauss (Freddie Fox) and Mabel Wisbech (Susan Wokoma).

The show's premise is a satirical take on the police procedural drama, adding in plenty of comedy and absurdity to keep viewers laughing. Eli Rabbit is a gruff and often vulgar detective who isn't afraid to bend the rules to get the job done. His sidekicks, Wilbur and Mabel, are eager and often naive officers who look up to Eli as a mentor.

The series begins with Eli investigating a string of murders in London's East End. As he delves deeper into the case, he uncovers a conspiracy involving high society figures and a secret society known as the Tofu Club. Along the way, the trio encounter a variety of eccentric characters, from a deranged artist to a steam-powered robot.

Throughout the series, Year of the Rabbit pokes fun at the conventions of the genre, with Eli often delivering hilarious one-liners and Wilbur and Mabel getting themselves into sticky situations. But the show is also filled with some genuinely emotional moments, as we see the characters struggle with personal demons and their own pasts.

Matt Berry's performance as Eli Rabbit is one of the show's highlights, as he brings a larger-than-life energy to the character. He's foul-mouthed, quick-witted, and unapologetically tough, but he's also got a soft side that comes out in his scenes with Mabel and Wilbur. Freddie Fox's portrayal of Wilbur Strauss is equally impressive, as he imbues the character with a sense of childlike wonder and an undying devotion to Eli. Susan Wokoma's performance as Mabel is equally strong, as she brings a great deal of heart to the role and is often the emotional center of the series.

Overall, Year of the Rabbit is a hilarious and entertaining series that combines great performances with clever writing and top-notch production design. The show's attention to detail is outstanding, from the Victorian-era costumes to the impressive set design that brings 19th-century London to life. If you're a fan of Matt Berry's previous work or British comedies in general, you're sure to love Year of the Rabbit.
