In "Year of the Rabbit," a British detective comedy set in Victorian London, follows the exploits of DI Rabbit, a hard-drinking, smart-mouthed detective who is not afraid to bend, if not outright flout, the rules. In episode 4, DI Rabbit is tasked with investigating a spate of burglaries at the shops down the East End. The thief is seemingly after the same thing in each establishment - a rare and valuable statue of Buddha.

Despite orders from his superiors to focus on catching the perpetrator, DI Rabbit finds himself more intrigued by the object of the thief's obsession. He sets out to learn more about the statues, believing they may have supernatural powers. The plot thickens as he discovers that several well-known individuals in London's elite circles also have vested interests in these statues, including the Prince of Wales himself.

As DI Rabbit tries to navigate the web of deception surrounding these statues, he's also grappling with personal issues. His estranged daughter is back in London, and he's trying to find a way to reconnect with her. Meanwhile, his partner, Strauss, takes a back seat in this episode, allowing Mabel, a street-wise accomplice, to take on a more prominent role.

The episode's pace is fast and enjoyable, with ample comedic moments sprinkled throughout. Viewers will appreciate the clever writing and the vivid attention to detail in set and costume design, which transport audiences to a realistic Victorian-era London. Furthermore, as with previous episodes, there's a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor and an irreverent attitude that adds an unexpected twist to the tired detective genre.

Throughout the episode, DI Rabbit proves that he can be creative, even when his colleagues don't trust his instincts. He seems to be getting closer to the truth, but twists and turns keep viewers guessing until the very end. The final scene packs a punch, revealing a surprising truth that leaves us with more questions than answers, setting us up for the rest of the season.

In episode 4 of "Year of the Rabbit," the writing is sharp, the acting is delightful, and there is a perfect mixture of action, mystery, and humor. The show continues to forge ahead as a breath of fresh air from standard detective procedurals, and audiences will be eagerly waiting to see what's next in store for DI Rabbit and his associates.
