Yeh Meri Family is a heartwarming Indian web series set in the 1990s, following the daily lives of the Gupta family and their neighbors in a middle-class neighborhood of Jaipur. The show is a nostalgic trip down memory lane for anyone who grew up in that era, with its pop culture references, handmade toys, and simpler times.
In Season 1, Episode 5, titled "Kacchi Ghodi," we see the Gupta family gearing up for a family wedding. Harshu's cousin Priyanka is getting married, and the whole family is excited to attend. Over dinner, Harshu's father invites everyone to perform a traditional Rajasthani dance called "Kacchi Ghodi" at the wedding. The dance involves wearing colorful, embroidered costumes and pretending to ride on horses while performing complex steps and beats. Harshu's older brother Dabbu, who is already annoyed at having to attend the wedding in the first place, scoffs at the idea of dancing like a fool, but eventually agrees to practice with the family. Harshu's mother, meanwhile, is busy with her own wedding preparations, including ironing clothes and making sweets for the guests.
One day, while Harshu is playing with his friends, he spots a horse toy made of wood and sticks. The toy was used to play the "Kacchi Ghodi" game, and it immediately catches Harshu's attention. He takes the toy to his grandfather, who promptly tells him the story of the game. With his grandfather's help, Harshu starts practicing the game with his friends, hoping to impress his family with his newfound skills at the wedding. But when his friends all back out of the performance at the last minute, leaving Harshu as the lone rider, his confidence takes a hit.
As the day of the wedding nears, tensions rise in the Gupta household. Dabbu is still sulking about having to attend the wedding, while Harshu's mother frets about the perfect outfit for her and her family. Harshu's father is the only one who seems genuinely happy about the wedding, and he keeps practicing his dance moves whenever he gets the chance. Harshu, too, is struggling to keep up with the dance steps, and he starts to doubt if he will be able to perform in front of so many people.
Finally, the day of the wedding arrives, and the Gupta family sets off to the venue in their best clothes. When they reach the venue, they realize that many other families have also come prepared to perform the "Kacchi Ghodi" dance. Harshu's family joins the throngs of people dressed in colorful costumes, and the dance competition begins. One family after another performs the intricate steps of the dance, each trying to outdo the other with their skills. Harshu's family is the last to perform, and as they take the stage, Harshu is still wracked with nerves. But when the music starts, he finds himself riding high on the wooden horse toy, his legs moving in perfect sync with the rhythm.
The whole family gets into the groove of the dance, with Harshu's father leading the group and Dabbu even cracking a smile. Harshu's mother, who had initially been worried about looking foolish, joins in with enthusiasm, swaying her hips to the beat. As the song reaches its crescendo, the Gupta family breaks into a coordinated routine, their costumes fluttering as they move. When the dance is over, the audience erupts into applause, and Harshu's family is declared the winner of the "Kacchi Ghodi" competition. Harshu, who had started off nervous and unsure, can't stop grinning from ear to ear, proud of his family's victory.
In the end, "Kacchi Ghodi" is not just a dance; it symbolizes the spirit of family and togetherness that unites the Guptas and their neighbors. The episode ends on a happy note, with the whole family basking in the afterglow of their triumph.
