Ep 3. Forged in Fire

Liza and Kelsey attend a book fair in Germany where they run into a problematic colleague, Philipp. Charles invites Pauline home. As they head into the tower control room, Liza learns that Charles has secretly staged elaborate strings of lights to celebrate their relationship. Both Kelsey and Liza can't help but gush over the romantic gesture. When one of Charles' colleagues comes in and interrupts, Charles asks him to leave and tells Liza that their moment is worth fighting for. Meanwhile, Kelsey finds herself at the mecca of publishing when she goes to the Frankfurt Book Fair. She quickly realizes that working with Claire is going to be a nightmare and she'll have to stick it out until they can get her back on board. Claire's obnoxious behavior puts Kelsey on edge throughout the episode, and finally, she snaps and tells her off. Claire then tells Kelsey to leave and not come back.

Meanwhile, back in New York, Diana is obsessed with figuring out who Empirical's mole is. She enlists Liza's help, but Liza is reluctant to get involved. Eventually, Diana convinces Liza to join her in a mission to catch the mole. They sneak around the office trying to gather clues and end up confronting their suspects, forcing them to confess. Unsurprisingly, they don't find the mole, but they do discover some interesting things about their colleagues.

As the episode progresses, we see Charles and Liza struggling with their relationship. Though they both want to be together, there are obstacles in their way. Liza worries that their age difference will be a problem, while Charles is concerned that her past lies will come back to haunt them. Despite their reservations, however, they can't seem to stay away from each other.

In a heart-wrenching scene, Liza and Charles finally decide to break things off. As Liza leaves the apartment, Charles asks her to wait, saying that he'll leave Empirical to be with her. Liza is overcome with emotion, but ultimately decides that it wouldn't be fair for Charles to give up his job and his life for her. The episode ends with Liza and Charles parting ways, both unsure of what the future holds.

Overall, "Forged in Fire" is a powerful episode that explores the obstacles that Liza and Charles must overcome in order to be together.
