As the Doctor attempts to repair the TARDIS, he and his companions are suddenly overcome by a poisonous gas and are left unconscious. When they come to, the Doctor discovers that the TARDIS has been thrown off course and they are headed directly for a collision with the planetoid Desperus. Meanwhile, Barbara and Susan are trapped in a malfunctioning lift and must find a way to escape before it drops them to their deaths.

As the situation becomes more dire, the Doctor realizes that something is causing the TARDIS to malfunction, and soon discovers that a strange, alien power is at work. As he works to repair the ship and prevent the collision, he must also unravel the mystery of the alien force that is attempting to destroy them.
