The mystery-thriller follows the lives of four school-age girls whose lives take a dramatic turn upon the sudden disappearance of the "queen bee" leader of their popular highschool clique. The series is set in the fictional American town of Rosewood, a suburb in Pennsylvania. The story is set one year later, when each member of the clique begins receiving mysterious text messages from an elusive unknown character named "A" who threatens to expose the group's secrets. Initially, the members think that the messages are coming from Allison herself, but she is found dead and the girls realize that someone else is privy to the long-hidden secrets that they thought only Allison knew.
The group is made up of Aria Montgomery, the artist of the group, who has moved back to Rosewood after living for one year in Iceland. Spencer Hastings is the intelligent one who tries to please her well-to-do parents. Hanna Marin is the popular "It" girl who secretly suffers from self-image issues and bulimia. Emily Fields is the jock girl of the clique and was in love with Allison. As the story line progresses, the audience learns that Allison was a very charismatic and manipulative young woman. Hated by most, Allison was known for her conniving ways and use of blackmail to get what she wanted.
Casting for the show began in the fall of 2009, with the pilot episode being shot in Vancouver and then principal production moving to Los Angeles, CA. The show is produced by Warner Horizon Television and Alloy Entertainment and distributed by Warner Bros. Television. The show was heavily promoted by ABC Family, including a series of racy promotional posters and television advertisements. Popular music is heavily used within the series, with the theme song Secret being performed by the all female folk-rock band The Pierces. The show has used music from bands like The Fray, Colbie Caillat, Ben's Brother, Florence + The Machine, Selena Gomez and McFly. An official soundtrack was released on February 15, 2011.
The series debuted with mixed critical reviews. Reviewers from the New York Times and the LA Times were positive, praising the series' camp factor and its ability to be self-aware. Entertainment Weekly was less favorable, commenting that the story lines were cliched and uninspired.
Despite a mixed bag of critical reviews, Pretty Little Liars premiered to high ratings on June 8th 2010. It became the highest rated series debut for ABC Family. The debut episode was seen by 2.47 million viewers and the show continues to attract a high number of viewers in the much coveted 12-34 demographic. In the summer of 2010 the season finale drew in 3.07 million viewers. The series has already been renewed for a fourth season. The show is broadcast internationally in a number of countries including the UK, South Africa, Spain, Poland and Croatia just to name a few.
In the United States, the show has been nominated for and won awards with several popular award shows. The Gay and Lesbian Critics Association has nominated the series with Outstanding Drama Series for three consecutive seasons. The Teen Choice Awards recognized actors Ian Harding and Lucy Hale for Choice Summer TV Star: Male and Female respectively.

Pretty Little Liars News
A mid-season hiatus can be an unfortunate thing for fans. Alas, everybody needs a break. "Pretty Little Liars," on the other hand, isn't taking it completely easy. "Pretty Dirty Secrets," an eight-episode web series, debuts Aug. 28 and sets up the story of the ABC Family drama's Halloween return, featuring "American Idol" finalist Adam Lambert.
Aria faces problems with her grades as she tries to get into her dream school. Elsewhere in Rosewood, Caleb finally talks to Hanna.
"Pretty Little Liars" star Lucy Hale opened up about her past struggles with an eating disorder, saying that she "would go days without eating." Plus: is Hale in line to play Anastasia Steele?
With "Pretty Little Liars" a bona fide ABC Family hit, Lucy Hale's career is coming full-circle. Nine years ago, she was a contestant on the brief "American Idol" spin-off "American Juniors." Today, she's announced that the "American Idol"-affiliated record label has signed her to a contract, with her debut album coming in 2013.
The identity of creepy "Pretty Little Liars" stalker "A" has been the question at the center of the popular ABC Family show from the beginning, and, according to the series' producers, that mystery will soon unravel. EW is reporting that the big "PLL" mystery will be answered in the season finale on March 13th.
All-seeing, all-knowing text messages from beyond the grave might sounds like the plot of a horror movie. It's also the premise of ABC Family's smash hit "Pretty Little Liars" which comes back tonight to air a special Halloween episode of the show's on-break second season.
Someone needs to wipe the dew off their lilly, while one of the Liars gets busy puking on a wedding dress. The girls decide to spill the beans to Dr. Sulivan, who makes some discoveries of her own. The twists get twistier, the lies get historic, and flashbacks get flashed. Get your episode recap here.
Earlier this year the Florida Family Association, a conservative "moral watchdog" group with ties to the notoriously homophobic organization Focus On the Family, set its sights on ABC Family's popular show, Pretty Little Liars. The FFA asserts that the show's portrayal of main character Emily Fields, who came out as queer in Season 1, is sending a message that "reinforces and legitimizes [the] homosexual lifestyle." General Mills, I know what you did with your advertising money this summer, and I think it's total bulls^&t.
Are you a fan of "Pretty Little Liars"? The show and our recaps of it are some of the most popular content on Yidio, but according to the Florida Family Association, the content in the show is offensive. The group is leading a boycott of businesses who advertise on the show, and apparently it's starting to work. General Mills and Remax have both reportedly left as advertisers of the show recently.
Aria confesses her kiss with Jason to Emily in the Rosewood High Cafeteria. Emily sees Aria's confession and raises her all the creepy stalker pictures of her the other little liars found in Jason's darkroom/shed of evil. To her credit Aria immediately confronts him, which he's handily available for since he can't stop lurking around the high school, shoulder-touching at-risk youth. What happened next? Check out the episode recap for "Touched by an A-ngel."
