Rob and Laura are having a romantic dinner at their favorite Italian restaurant when they notice that a couple sitting a few tables away is going through a heated argument. The argument ends abruptly when the woman stands up, throws her napkin on the table and leaves in a huff. As she leaves, the man follows her out and hands her a check.

Later, at home, Rob cant stop talking about the incident. He is amazed that a man would give his date a check for her half of the dinner bill. Laura is perplexed by Rob's amazement. She thinks it's perfectly natural for a couple to split the bill, especially if they're not married. Rob is not convinced. He thinks that the man in the restaurant was a cheapskate for not paying for the entire meal.

Rob's opinion on the subject causes a rift between him and Laura. She thinks he's being old fashioned and chauvinistic, while he thinks she's being naive and unrealistic. The argument escalates when two of their friends, Jerry and Millie, show up unannounced. Jerry sides with Laura, while Millie agrees with Rob. The four of them get into a heated debate, which ends with Laura storming off to bed.

Rob, left alone with Jerry and Millie, decides to prove his point by inviting them to dinner and offering to pay for everything. During the dinner, Rob kindly sets the mood by serving his friends with gourmet dishes and fine wines. After the meal, when the check came, Rob immediately grabbed it before Jerry and Millie could even look at it.

Rob's friends were shocked by his action. They thought he was being ridiculous and stingy. The argument that was once between Rob and Laura has now extended to include Jerry and Millie. The only thing that the quartet could agree on was that the check-grabber was stirring up all the trouble.

As the night wore on, they all became intoxicated by the wine they had consumed. Then, without knowing it, they all started to grab things - such as the vase or painting- from Rob and Laura's home, claiming that they had all wanted the objects for years. Even the painting over the mantle was not safe from their drunken antics. The foursome's actions provided a hilarious conclusion to a night of friendship, laughter, and a game of grabbing.

The episode is a light-hearted exploration of generational differences, social norms, and one, weird night. It finds humor in the unspoken rules of etiquette and the societal pressure to pay the check. Though it's set in the 60s, the message is universal across time. The episode emphasizes the power of compromise, friendship, and having a good laugh, whether through our differences or our shared gifts for grabbing.
