She meets gossip journalist Peter Carlton who concocts a story about a mysterious Englishwoman named Mrs. Smythe-Smythe. He creates the character because he is facing a deadline without a story. The mysterious women reportedly spends time hunting tigers, jumping out of planes and driving men crazy. Carlton convinces Elaine to impersonate Mrs. Smythe-Smythe. He persuades her it may be the big break she was been searching for.
