The motion picture Mary Reilly is an adaptation of the novel by Valerie Martin, but is also the reworking of the original novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. Fans of literature know the tale as, the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The 1996 film takes on decidedly new directions by director Stephen Fears, so it ends up being a movie that reviews have either loved or hated. Mary Reilly is overwhelming with a cast of major stars that were chosen by director Stephen Fears. The movie stars Julia Roberts as Mary Reilly, who is the focal point as the primary servant living with Dr. Henry Jekyll in the storyline. She is a devoted household employee to Dr. Jekyll, as his servant, confidant, friend, and also something more deep down. Mary Reilly has a looking glass view on the life of this lonely and odd man, but becomes wrapped into his private world full of dark secrets. The pivotal turmoil's in the movie Mary Reilly begin when Dr. Jekyll informs his household staff that an assistant will be taking up residence with him. The assistant is the secretive and mysterious Mr. Edward Hyde. The storyline follows the original novel, but diverts in and out based on the more modern interpretations of Valerie Martin's book. It also takes directions that seem to stem from changes in screenplay and other in-house influences on the movie overall. Mary Reilly has a supporting cast which includes John Malkovich, George Cole, Michael Gambon, and Glenn Close. There has been much talk and controversy over this film worldwide, but it does not keep Mary Reilly from offering audiences a most interesting take on a classic piece of literature. Perhaps that is why it stands the test of time. Mary Reilly is an honest and well cast movie, but also a film overshadowed by short sighted critics and negative media reviews.
