Set shortly after the close of the Boer War, this charming family film describes the adventures of two orphaned Scots boys who arrive in Halifax, Nova Scotia to live on their grandfather's farm. The elderly farmer, James MacKenzie, (played by Charlton Heston) still grieves the loss of the children's father in the distant South African conflict. He takes out his anger on many members of the household and a nearby Dutch-Canadian neighbor, until a surprising turn of events causes the old man to re-evaluate his harsh rules. The well-acted film contains vivid camera work, sharp characterization and an excellent script.
