With Brownie at their side, the boys finally begin to feel like they belong in their new home. They begin to make new friends and explore the beautiful scenery that Nova Scotia has to offer.

However, their newfound happiness is short-lived. James falls ill and is unable to work or provide for the boys. Faced with the possibility of being separated and put into the foster care system, the boys take matters into their own hands. They hatch a plan to kidnap the rich son of a local businessman, hoping to collect a ransom and use the money to take care of James and themselves.

The boys manage to kidnap the young son, Tom, with the help of Brownie, and hide him in an abandoned barn. They start to regret their decision and realize the gravity of what they have done. The MacKenzie brothers feel guilty, and so they decide to take Tom back to his parents and confess their crime.
