The Perez Family

"On the way to finding a family, she found love."

This comedy, based on a novel by Christine Bell, concerns a pair of unrelated Cuban refugees who pretend to be a family in order to increase their chances of being allowed to stay in the United States. The fake family includes a former aristocrat, played by Alfred Molina, and a former prostitute, played by Marisa Tomei, who pretend to be married. Anjelica Huston plays Carmela, the aristocrat's ex-wife, who appears suddenly and threatens to upend the whole plan. The film was directed by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake, Queen of Katwe) and co-stars Chazz Palminteri, Trini Alvarado, Celia Cruz, and Ranjit Chowdhry.
