The Way Way Back starring Steve Carell, Toni Collette, and Allison Janney is a coming of age story about young 14 year old Duncan. During his summer vacation he and his mom, her boyfriend and the boyfriend's daughter all go out to a beach house, where Duncan is trying to fit in. The beach house belongs to his mother's boyfriend (Steve Carell) who makes it difficult for the young boy by putting him down at every turn in his life. Duncan is already an awkward child who wants nothing more than to fit in with the people around him. Fed up with it Duncan meets Owen, the manager of the Water Wizz park. He becomes friends with this gentleman and his life begins to turn around as Owen takes Duncan on as his "protégé." This coming of age story shows Steve Carell as the bad guy and the adults of the story are having so much summer fun that Duncan seems to get lost in his own depression. His only salvation from his personal nightmare is working at Water Wizz with Owen and all the other employees who respect him. Duncan works at Water Wizz while also lying to his mother and her boyfriend about what he's doing during the day. Duncan has to learn through personal lessons about trust, relationships and being yourself. The only other person who seems to understand what Duncan is going through is Steve Carell's daughter. She and Duncan become unlikely friends and much more as Duncan begins to develop into the strong young adult Owen is shaping him into. Without his friends and his adventures at Water Wizz Duncan would be lost in a sea of rejection, mainly put up by his mother and the other influential adults in his life. Duncan must persevere to make an impression on not only himself but anyone who can relate to being the downtrodden.
